As the Travillas winter at Viamede, Elsie's birthplace, Lily, the newest member of the family is born, but it is later realized that she is very frail. Soon after returning to Ion, the family’s doctor encourages them to spend the debilitating summer months at “Crags,” a friend’s mountain home in upstate New York along the Hudson River. Although she loves her dear friend, Lucy Ross, Elsie’s only hesitancy is that her children will be influenced in a negative way knowing that the Rosses have not brought up their children in the love of the Lord, rendering them unruly and disrespectful. With no other alternative, Elsie consents, and they are presented with many opportunities to share the love and truth of Christ amidst the turmoil of the Ross children. Soon after they return to Ion, they are faced with a life-threatening injury to an elder Dinsmore, and later yet, must trust the loving Savior completely with the precious life of their youngest one.
